Peace Builder

This Award recognizes and honors an individual who provides humanitarian aid, sees to the economic development, institution & nation building, conflict prevention, conflict resolution & reconciliation and establishes educational, social or structural initiatives that contribute to positive social change. The nominee must facilitate the establishment of peace, assist in preventing the recurrence of violence by addressing causes of conflict and creates visible long lasting solution especially in conflict and unrest areas over a period of time.

The Peace Builder advocates and champions the use of dialogue, negotiation, tolerance and forgiveness as the preferred instruments for resolving even the most difficult conflicts. The depth of the Peace Builder’s commitment and involvement demonstrate the triumph of truth, democracy and justice over lies, oppression and violence. Through inner strength, dogged focus and courageous honesty, the PeaceBuilder is establishing order in some of Africa’s most troubled areas.

 

The Criteria:  

Individual or organization who:

  1. Advocates and champions the use of dialogue, negotiation, tolerance and forgiveness as the preferred instruments for resolving even the most difficult conflicts.
  2. Through the depth of his/her involvement is demonstrating that truth, democracy and justice arevictorious over lies, oppression and violence.
  3. Through strength, bravery and dedication is establishing order in some of Africa’s most troubled areas.
  4. Make outstanding contributions in shaping the destiny of their communities.
  5. Lead the peaceful transition to a more just and tolerant society.

Justice Builder

This award recognizes and honours an individual or entity who builds initiatives, shape new and humane approach to equitable justice in Africa while defending and upholding the rights of those at the bottom rung of the economic pyramid in order to pull humanity out of the mud of violence, war and conflict. Also, one who demonstrates that access to justice should offer a variety of approaches and options for dispute resolution within the judicial system. No serving judge is eligible for this nomination. 

Justice Builders build initiatives and projects that are invaluable in helping to identify, resolve legal challenges and improve access to social, economic and environmental justice. A justice builder also demonstrates that access to justice should offer a variety of approaches and options for dispute resolution within the judicial system as citizens should be empowered to find satisfactory solutions to their problems utilizing a wider menu of choices.

 

The Criteria 

The award recognizes and honours an individual, or entity that is making a positive and meaningful contribution to justice reform and access to justice by: 

  1. Improving access to social, economic and environmental justice;
  2. Generating initiatives and projects that are invaluable in helping to identify and resolve legal challenges and access to justice; 
  3. Championing justice initiatives which pull humanity out of the mud of violence, war and conflict;
  4. Shaping a new and humane approach to the uppermost task of achieving equitable justice in Africa in our time; 
  5. Defending the legal rights of those at the bottom rung of the economic pyramid.

Community Peace Builder

This Award seeks to recognize and honour traditional rulers or community leaders who have committed themselves to promote development within their respective communities through social work, and selfless leadership. The nominee must have demonstrated significant achievements in building inclusive communities, conflict prevention, conflict  resolution, and reconciliation. 

The community peace builder is one who has successfully mobilized members of their communities, promoted inclusion, and developed resources and collaborative relationships necessary for catalyzing positive social change.

 

The Criteria:

The award recognizes and honours a community or traditional leader who: 

  1. Has made consistent effort to introduce initiatives that enthrones peace and peaceful coexistence within their communities and in Nigeria as a whole.
  2. Advocates and champions the use of mediation, negotiation, dialogue and forgiveness as the preferred instruments for resolving disputes.
  3. Develop initiatives and projects that are help promote access to justice and resolve legal challenges.
  4. Aims to make significant contributions to the standard of living and quality of life of the residents of the community.

Institute Peace Builder

This Award recognizes and honors an institution/organization or entity that uses their core business and competitive advantages to contribute to peace and stability, creating shared value. An organization that is proactive in building both peace and opportunity especially in insurgency areas by applying risk, conflict analysis, and conflict-sensitive & transformation practices.  Institutional Peace-builders are entities that develop strategies that promote peace and stability for a better & stronger business and communities. 

These institutions build a global approach, with ad-hoc initiatives of peace-building such as humanitarian aids and advocacy, economic development, conflict prevention, resolution and reconciliation, ensuring a more peaceful society. They also support where appropriate, local, regional or national dialogues, community grievance mechanisms and peace processes; implement social, economic and environmental investment that underpins peaceful, inclusive communities.

The Criteria: 

The award recognizes and honours a corporation that: 

  1. Advocates and champion the capabilities of the residents of the community within which it operates to live in peaceful co-existence;
  2. Works to promote human rights, prevent violent conflict and contribute to more peaceful societies; 
  3. Introduces and operationalizes mechanisms which facilitate dialogue and cooperation;
  4. Makes significant contributions to the standard of living and quality of life of the residents of the community within which they operate; 
  5. Is building partnerships and constructively engaging community stakeholders in peace building initiatives

Youth Innovation for Peace

This Award category (limited to those under 35) recognizes and honors an individual/youth that promotes peace and cooperation beyond traditional boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity & nationality through intellectual dialogues, conflict analyses & transformation narratives. This Youth sees to the promotion of dialogue & cooperation advocating and championing the capabilities of the residents of communities to live in peaceful co-existence. 

The future of Nigeria and Africa resides largely on its youths and the ability of youths to effectively harness the positive capabilities of their strength and good character. With 70% of Nigeria’s population below 35 years of age and 65% of Africa’s population under 35, the need to focus and invest enormously on the youths as a precondition for the continent’s development cannot be overemphasized given that strength and enthusiasm required to positively shape the social, economic and political landscape relies mainly on the youths.

The Criteria: 

The Award Category (limited to those under 35) recognizes exceptional youths who: 

  1. Grew up in societies that are or were immersed in violence and have despite the odds, emerged strongly to challenge the debilitating environmental structures with outstanding initiatives in peace-building, conflict management and reconciliation.
  2. Implore tools such as intellectual dialogues, conflict analyses & transformation narratives to promote peace and cooperation beyond traditional boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity & nationality.
  3. Stand on the common ground of universal moral principles and are committed to promoting reconciliation, overcoming barriers, and building peace using various methods, which include technology.
  4. Save and include others from conflict areas in peace processes in order to amplify their voices in their shared future.
